Also known as Elder Cain, Deckard Cain is the last human mage who practices the obscure arcane magic. Appearing in all of three Diablo releases, Cain provides us with valuable advice for many quests. He is the descendant of Jered Cain, the man who imprisoned Diablo 200 years before the events of Diablo 1.

Deckard Cain in Diablo 1

Before the undated Diablo 3 Release, Blizzard published Cain's journal as lore. The journal begins with the story of King Leoric who has gone mad searching for his missing son and Cain's thoughts of doubt about the brave Horadrim and the Lords of the Burning Hells. Cain always imagined himself as the "Last of the Horadrim", traveling the world to fight the evil, but never believed the legends to be true.

Deckard Cain suspects Lazarus, the supposed Archbishop of Light who lured a group of villagers to their horrific end under the disguise of searching for the king's missing son, to be the "architect of the evil that had befallen the town." As more and more people flee Tristram, a mysterious sorceress and more adventurers arrive, but they are only interested in pillaging and looting. Until one day, when a true hero comes to town and Cain joins forces with this champion to end Lazarus - the evil mage who's kidnapped Albrecht and perhaps even freed Diablo from his ancient prison.

The hero stands out victorious from the fight with the Lord of Terror, but he is forever changed by the horrors from the catacombs. Or so Deckard Cain thought, because in reality our champion carried with him the very being of Diablo to the east, leaving only pain and destruction behind. Cain's friend was corrupted into a slavering demonic beast thirsting of human blood.

Cain is the only known survivor of Tristram's destruction and he's waiting his end caged and abandoned all hope. But the impossible becomes possible and a new hero comes into his rescue. Elder Cain then follows him around, providing advice and identifying items free of charge as gratitude. They travel together to Lut Gholein, following on the steps of the Dark Wanderer, Cain's old friend who has surrender himself hopeless to Diablo.

After the confrontation with the demon Duriel at the tomb of Tal Rasha, Deckard Cain realizes they were too late and the Wandered and Baal have departed together to free their demon brother, Mephisto. The hero who has risked everything to save the world from the Lord of Terror can hardly resist to the corruption influence of evil... Fortunately he successfully defeated Mephisto shortly after his resurrection and now he descended into the Burning Hells to confront the Wandered, who know has been completely overtaken by Diablo.

Diablo is killed by Cain's companions, but soon a demonic army is sent by Baal to Arreat. The Soulstones of Mephisto and Diablo have been destroyed; only one remained. Our heroes kill Baal as well, but the angel Tyrael brings grave news: an artifact of great power, the Worldstone, was corrupted by Baal and now threatens the entire world. Tryael wants to destroy it by Cain fears that his action would be the end of us all...

Deckard Cain in Diablo 3

Twenty years have passed since the demonic Lords of Terror, Diablo, Mephisto, and Baal, ran amok the world of Sanctuary, bringing humanity to its knees. The memory of the battles with evil slowly fades away... When Deckard Cain returned to the ruins of Tristram Cathedral, a Harbinger of Death fell from the sky, striking the very ground where Diablo once entered our world. The world of Sanctuary calls for heroes once again to defend the mortal realm against the reawakened ancient evils of the Burning Hells.

It's been twenty years since the events in Diablo II (by the way, when does Diablo 3 come out?), and Deckard Cain has spent all that time researching the ancient lore and trying to warn the people that the danger is not past. But no one listens anymore, people don't want to believe or think about such things, and Cain's grown increasingly desperate as he is reaching the end of his life as well. Will you listen?
